Cordell Bank was originally created 93 million years ago, as a member of the Sierra Nevada. The bank is located on the continental shelf, about 49 miles northwest of the Golden Gate Bridge and 23 miles west of the Point Reyes Lighthouse. Spatial information was combined with the marine habitat classification framework defined by the Ecological Society of America (ESA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Habitat Conservation. Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary is an extremely productive marine area off the west coast of United States in northern California, just north of the Gulf of the Farallones. The region of Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary (GFNMS) and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary (CBNMS) comprises one of the world’s most productive and biologically rich ocean areas and protects over 700 species of fish and deep benthic species. The Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council is a community based body that was established in 2001. The bank is inhabited by a vibrant invertebrate and rockfish community which could be vulnerable to hypoxic conditions. The bank is located on the edge of an underwater peninsula and is surrounded by deep water on three sides. Two moorings outfitted with oceanographic instruments are again positioned at Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary (CBNMS) for the second year in a row after CBNMS staff worked with Bodega Marine Lab scientists to re-deploy the moorings on May 19, 2015 for the spring through fall seasons. The tour explores the geology of the Cordell Bank, potential impact of global climate change and ocean acidification, invasive species monitoring in the Sanctuary, and the ROV as a tool for scientific research. Due to the success of the expedition and the commitment of its members to bring Cordell Bank’s uniqueness to public awareness, it was nominated for National Marine Sanctuary status. Photos and video taken with a remote operated vehicle (ROV) in 2014 illustrate the abundance of life in the Sanctuary. Results from 2014 showed that hypoxic or near-hypoxic conditions were recorded at the buoys for about two weeks in June and July following strong winds and upwelling conditions. Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary is entirely offshore. The prevailing California Current flows southward along the coast, causing an upwelling of nutrient-rich water that provided the foundation for the area's marine ecosystem.. Cordell Bank is also a major foraging ground for passing seabirds. Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary. Recreational SCUBA diving is not recommended in the sanctuary due to depth and currents. Gale winds and the Earth's rotation drive surface water away from the shore, only to be replaced by an upwelling of more nutrient-rich waters from offshore. The upper reef crests of Cordell Bank are carpeted in lush invertebrate cover, including hydrocorals, stony corals, sponges, anemones, hydroids, macroalgae and tunicates, providing critical habitat to a variety of first-year juvenile and adult rockfish species.
